What are fractions, decimals and percentages?
A fraction represents a part of a whole, such as 1/4 (one quarter). A decimal expresses the fraction in base-10 form, such as 1/4 = 0.25. A percentage is a fraction with a denominator of 100, such as 1/4 = 25%. They convert to one another: fraction → decimal is numerator ÷ denominator; decimal → percentage is decimal × 100.
How to convert quickly
- Fraction to decimal: divide the numerator by the denominator, e.g. 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
- Decimal to percentage: multiply by 100, e.g. 0.75 × 100 = 75%
- Percentage to fraction: divide by 100 and simplify, e.g. 25% = 25/100 = 1/4
